Send us out

At our church, we have a relatively small number of songs that we find are really suitable for the very end of the service. When listening to our minister reading the post-communion prayer: “Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.
Amen.” it struck me that it would be great to be able to sing this corporately.

One end-of-service blessing that we use is from common worship, taken from Ephesians 3

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or conceive, by the power which is at work among us, to him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all ages. Amen.”

So in writing the song, I used the ‘send us out’ section as the chorus and the Ephesians 3 word to form the verse

I wanted to make the song lively and positive – for people to go out enthused, so developed the gospel feel music. As usual in my writing, I started with the main chorus hook (the ‘send us out’ bit) and then developed it from there.

The optional responsive chorus lyric ‘we will go in the power of your Spirit’ I felt provided an opportunity for people to ‘buy into’ what is being said as they leave.

Below are the lyrics to 'Send us out'

Send us out in the power of Your Spirit
To live for You and praise Your name
Send us out in the power of Your Spirit
To live for You and praise Your name

Now to Him, Our God who is able
To do much more Than we ask or conceive
By his power That is at work within us
Glory to God, Glory to God,
Glory to God for ever and ever

[Alternative chorus]
We will go in the power of Your Spirit
To live for You and praise Your name
We will go in the power of Your Spirit
To live for You and praise Your name
